On the eve of his 12th birthday, Elijah Beaumont is super excited to learn a messenger delivered HIM a package. The package's return address is only a strange symbol that leaves both Elijah and his Uncle Jack confused and more than a little suspicious; after all,  nothing is delivered in Washington, D.C. without a clearly identified sender on the label.

 

As soon as he opens the package, a mysterious adventure is set into motion. Inside an antique wooden box is a magnifying glass, a ring with the same strange symbol and a journal with his grandfather's name written inside it. With the help of his best friend Rosemary, Elijah discovers the magnifying glass lets them talk to dead people, the ring is "alive" and the journal is filled with secrets written in a way only he can understand them. Soon, the best friends are navigating a hidden world behind the walls of our country's most treasured landmarks and far below the streets of Washington, D.C. while learning to use these magical instruments, uncovering a deeply guarded family secret, dodging scary giants known as Enforcers and quickly concluding no matter what happens both their lives are changed forever.
